Official Translation Services for Your Documents
A certified translation is the official translation of documents, including certificates, Government documentation, statements, or passports. Your documents must be translated and certified by a professional & accredited translator.
A translation is considered certified when it includes a statement of truth with a signature, stamp, and date. Foreign-issued documents that are non-English and for official purposes within the UK require a Certified Translation.
A certified translation must include the following elements:
- Confirmation from the translator or translation company that it is an accurate translation of the original document
- The date of the translation
- The full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company
- The translator or translation company's contact details
If your original certificates or documents are not in English, UK authorities, such as Gov UK or the Home Office, can ask you to provide a certified translation. If your application is abroad, you must present your documents in the country's official language.

What is an Official Translation?
For a translation to be considered officially certified, it needs a dated statement of truth with a signature and stamp from the translator or a representative of an accredited translation agency.
The type of certified translation you need may depend on where your official application takes place, which authority requested it, and what is the purpose of your official application. Learn more about certified translations here.
TS24 provides certified, sworn, notarised and apostilled translations which are accepted globally. We explain the key differences below.
-
Certified Translation
A certified translation is an official translation of documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, visa applications, or academic papers, accompanied by a certification. The certification must be legalised by a stamp & signature and/or sworn statement of truth from an accredited provider.
Authorities in the United Kingdom and other European countries often require certified translations. Official translations produced by TS24 are completed on our stamped, signed and dated letterhead and contain all details required to make your translation legalised.
-
Notarised Translation
A notarised translation is simply a translation accompanied by a notarised signature verifying the translator's identity.
-
Sworn Translation
his type of certification involves an official translator or linguist verifying that they have personally carried out the translation and accurately conveyed the meaning of your document. This must be done in the presence of a lawyer or accredited notary public.
-
Legalised Translation (Apostilled)
Legalised, or Apostilled, translation is a translation that has been 'legalised' by the Government Ministry. This makes your translation accepted in foreign countries which are part of the Hague Convention. The translation will be affixed with an official Apostille.
Certifying Your Translation
To certify your translation, a professional translator must attest that it is a true, complete, and accurate translation of the original document you presented.
An official translation should be stamped, dated and/or initialled (by the translator and/or certifying authority such as TS24) to prevent misuse. The translation should also come with a certified cover letter or a statement of truth from a sworn translator.

Certified Translations in the UK
A certified translation is usually used for official and legal matters but may also be requested in other situations. If you require the documents translated for legal purposes, you would have to present a certified translation of the original documentation.
To certify a translation, the translator must legally attest that the translation is a true, complete and accurate translation of the original document. There are 4 main types of certified translations:
- Certified Translations
- Sworn Translations
- Apostilled Translations
- Notarised Translations
-
Certified Translations
A certified translation is a translation accompanied by an official certification from your chosen provider. Generally, this certification is in the form of a statement of truth, with a signature, stamp and date from the translator or a representative of an accredited translation agency.
Certified translations are required by UK authorities & organisations abroad. The certified translations produced by TS24 (see example) are completed on our letterhead and officially signed, stamped and dated, making them fully certified and legally recognised by authorities.
-
Sworn Translations
Sworn translations are certified translations that can only be provided by officially appointed translators in the country to which you submit your application. This type of certification involves an official translator or linguist verifying that they have personally carried out the translation and accurately conveyed the meaning of your document.
-
Apostilled Translations
If you intend to use your documents abroad, your documents may require an official apostille. For example, this certification may need an apostille from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to be officially validated.
-
Notarised (Legalised) Translations
The Government or other legal entities often require notarised translations. TS24 can provide notarised documents signed and stamped by an authorised notary. To do this, our team member will visit the notary's Office to sign and stamp the document legally.
More for Professional Translators
As a professional translator, you may be asked to provide a certified translation. Unlike other European countries, such as France, Poland or Spain, the UK does not have a 'sworn' system which requires translators to be registered in Government bodies.
Translations needed for official purposes, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, academic transcripts, passports or bank statements, can be, however, certified directly by a practising translator registered with official translation bodies, such as CIOL or ITI.
The UK Government states that a certified translation must be done by a translator registered by a professional body. You can see government's guidelines on certifying translated documents here.
