What is a certified translation?
A certified translation is a formally verified translation of documents, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy and/or Statement of Truth, attesting that it is a true and accurate representation of the original text. Such translations must be conducted by an accredited agency or a qualified translator.
When do you need a certified translation?
In the UK, certified translations are required when submitting documents for official, professional and administrative purposes, such as immigration applications, legal proceedings, or academic admissions. Authorities including the UK Home Office and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) typically require a signed statement confirming that the translation is accurate and complete.
Why do certified translations get rejected?
Based on our experience handling thousands of certified translations for official and legal use in the UK & internationally, the most common reasons translations are rejected by the Home Office, courts, UKVI and other official institutions are: missing translator or agency contact details, a missing Statement of Truth or Certificate of Translation Accuracy, an incomplete certification statement, and use of non-accredited translators.
Our Acceptance Guarantee
At TS24, every certified translation is carefully checked against these requirements and failure points, before it reaches you. If a receiving authority such as the Home Office, UKVI, a court, or a university does not accept your translation due to an error on our part, we will revise it free of charge or refund you in full. No small print, no extra cost, no hassle.
What's included in a certified translation
Every certified translation must include the following elements:
- Signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy and/or Statement of Truth
- A complete and accurate translation of the original document
- Translator or agency representative’s name and signature
- Source and target languages referenced
- Date of certification
- Contact details

Which Certified Translation Type Do You Need?
Every day, we prepare certified translations for visa applications, court proceedings, university admissions and other official submissions. Based on this experience, we understand that different authorities and countries have different certification requirements. Whether you need a certified, sworn, notarised or apostille translation, TS24 will prepare your translation according to the requirements of the receiving authority. Our specialists can advise you on the most suitable certification option to help ensure your translation meets the requirements for official use in the UK and internationally. TS24 provides all of the below certification types:
| Certification | What It Means | Who Verifies It |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Translation | A professionally translated document with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy (agency) and/or Statement of Truth (translator), confirming it is a true and complete translation of the original. | A qualified translator, or an ATC-accredited agency - the translator or agency is both preparer and certifier. |
| Sworn Translation | A translation completed by a 'sworn translator' - a linguist officially sworn in and registered with a court or government body in the country where the document will be used. | Arranged through TS24's extensive network of registered sworn translators abroad, as the UK has no domestic sworn-translator system. |
| Notarised Translation | The translator's identity and signature - not the translation's accuracy - are formally verified by a Notary Public, adding a further layer of legal authentication for official use. | A Notary Public, after a qualified translator has completed the translation. |
| Apostille (Legalised) | A certificate added to a document, or its notarisation, that authenticates the official's signature, stamp or seal - not the content - for use in countries that accept the Hague Apostille Convention. | The UK Legalisation Office (part of the FCDO) - a government authority, separate from the translator or notary. |
Certified Translations
A certified translation is the UK's standard format, and unlike sworn, notarised or apostille translations, needs no extra 'legal' authentication - just a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy and/or Statement of Truth. If your appointment is in person, a hard copy with an original signature and stamp is recommended; for online submissions, a certified digital PDF is generally sufficient.
Sworn Translations
Sworn translations are required in civil law countries such as Spain, France, Poland and Germany, where officially authorised sworn translators - known locally as a 'traductor jurado', 'traducteur assermenté', 'tłumacz przysięgły' or 'vereidigter Übersetzer' - certify translations for official use. The UK has no equivalent system, so if your destination country requires a sworn translation, we arrange it through our network of registered sworn translators in the relevant country.
Notarised Translation
A notarised translation is a certified translation whose translator's identity or signature has been verified by a Notary Public, rather than the accuracy of the translation itself, which remains the translator's responsibility. It's typically requested by overseas authorities who want an extra layer of legal verification beyond a standard certified translation.
Apostille Translation (Legalised)
Issued by the FCDO Legalisation Office, an Apostille authenticates the signature, stamp or seal of the official who certified the document - not its content - so a translation usually needs notarising first before it can be apostilled for use abroad.

OUR QUALITY ASSURANCE
Every certified translation at TS24 is completed by a qualified specialist and checked through a structured three-stage quality assurance process. First, your document is assigned to a professional, CIOL or ITI-qualified translator. It is then reviewed by a senior project manager against the requirements of the receiving authority - whether that's the Home Office, UKVI, a court, university, or embassy. Finally, we verify the certification wording and statement of truth before release and delivery. If any changes are needed, we'll amend your translation at no additional cost.
